Vehicle Description
1987 GMC 2500 Pickup
While relatively straight-lined and boxy in appearance, (leading to
their "Square-body" nickname from the public), the Rounded Line
trucks were the first generation of the C/K to be designed with the
use of computers and wind tunnels, optimizing the exterior shape
for lower drag and improved fuel economy. The chassis was an
all-new design, (with all trucks receiving a leaf-spring rear
suspension); K-Series trucks moved to all-wheel drive,
(shift-on-the-fly 4x4 was introduced for 1981).
For consignment, a "square body" GM labeled "rounded design" pickup
truck with a K designation. This means it's a 4x4, and our model
shown here has been lifted 12 inches with leaf springs. It has a
rebuilt 350ci V8, a custom interior, a custom stereo, a cowl
induction hood and blingy 24-inch chrome wheels. Classic trucks are
hot right now and we see a trend for owners to use them as a
promotional piece for their businesses, and this truck screams look
at me with its retina searing paint and larger than life
stance.
Exterior
Square and rectangle design abound right upfront with the
horizontal ribbed billet grille flanked by side by side headlights
with turn signals turn signals in square and rectangle form. A big
blingy chrome bumper protects the front and all badging has been
shaved. All steel, with well minded gaps, is bathed in retina
searing yellow, which shows well with only minor faults and
inclusions. Between the fenders is a 2 1/2-inch cowl induction
hood, giving a nice muscular look to the front end. Two doors with
shiny large mirrors hanging from either side grace the slab steel
sides of this monster rig and window trimmings are blackened. The
bed has a black sprayed in liner which shows in good condition,
having limited usage most likely because it's a bit of a climb to
get up there. On the back, is a solid gate and shiny bumper which
has the LED tail lights floating off of each side of the box.
Lightly smoked glass surrounds the passenger compartment and very
shiny 24-inch chrome snowflake style wheels are on all 4 corners,
and wrapped with 345/45R24 low profile rubber.
Interior
After a near Everest like climb to open the driver's door we are
rewarded with all custom inside for the door panels showing crank
windows and manual yellow dice topped locks, and all bathed in a
mix of creamy beige tweed and brown tweed inserts. The custom
creamy beige and brown appear again on the bench in tuck and roll
brown tweed for the inserts and smooth creamy tweed bolsters. The
standard dash is within along with the dressy silver trim molded
panel for the extra gauges available on this particular dash
arrangement. The thick wood rimmed rally steering wheel by Grant
fronts this dash which has a flip down AM/FM/CD radio. Deep pile
brown carpeting is looking nearly new and begging for a wriggling
session with my well manicured piggies. The 4x4 shifter resides on
the hump, and above is a felted broadcloth headliner in beige that
hangs tightly.
Drivetrain
Under the hood in a slightly dusty but corrosion free engine bay
complete with mirror polished fender liners. It has the correct and
rebuilt 350ci V8, factory TBI electronic fuel injection feeding it,
and on back is a rebuilt 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission. This
pushes power rearward to a 14 bolt rear and with the pull of a
lever power also goes to the front 10 bolt axle. Fab!
Undercarriage
Not unlike the engine bay, a light coating of dust and road dirt is
showing down below with some surface rust making an appearance on
the untreated components. A heavy application of black undercoated
pointing abound helping to keep things structurally sound. Headers
are now on and feed down from the engine, through the catalytic
converter and then branch into newer Borla dual exhaust that ends
with large polished tips behind the rear tires. Leaf springs are
all around and as noted a 12-inch lift has been added to the
suspension. Power disc braking is on front, and power drums for the
rear.
Drive-Ability
As expected this truck came right to life and was hitting on all 8
cylinders right out of the gate. We were off and it drove
beautifully for a lifted rig, switched seamlessly into 4x4 mode,
and handled nicely for a high truck. The brakes are solid, and all
was fun working 4x4 order, and yes, my tootsies did get their
weekly carpet wriggling session.
A great example from 1987 and the GMC camp, with a custom paint
job, custom interior and all around great square body classic
looks. Lifted 12 inches and like new tires wrapping shiny wheels. A
classic 4x4 pickup ready for the show or the go.
