Recent Scam - Google Checkout

From: James Varkey@hotmail.com
Hi again
As I told you in my previews email , all the documents are send at Google Checkout I will explain in a few steps how the process work:
1.I will open a case with Google.
2.They will send us the forms of the payment.
3.You make the payment like is state in the forms that you receive.
4.They secure the money and contact me to make the arrangement of the shipping.
5.I make the shipping and I will send you the details.
6.You receive the car and give your approve to Google to forward me the money.
Note:I will not receive any money from Google until you receive the car, inspect it and send the confirmation to them.If you are not comfortable with it you can send it back(on my expense) and Google will give your money back immediately .But I'm sure that you will love the car and keep it for you.
So please let me know if you have the money ready so i can open the case with Google. They will provide us live support also 24/24 hours.

From: J James Varkey
HI,
I want to explain you my terms and everything by e-mail.
Right now the car is in Seattle WA and i want to know, before dealing, if you really want to purchase it because there are other potential buyers asking for the car. I already had some buyers who promised me that they are sure they want the car and after lot of negotiations one of them said that he lost some money and the other one never answered my calls. So you have to understand me that i can't afford loosing more days of my work, this is one of the reasons that i charged a shipping company who sealed the car in to a container, and will ship it to the next owner. All the shipping fees will be paid by me.

If we set an agreement my suggestion is to make the transaction through Google Checkout, as the third part, because they are providing the most reliable and secure services (holding your funds until you receive the vehicle and never release them without your approval) in which concerns the on-line sales, and because i am using their services for years and i was very satisfied every time. If you decide to buy my car you will have to pay the amount to Google Checkout where is going to be secured until you'll get the vehicle. After that you will have a 7 days inspection period to decide if you keep it or not. In case you are pleased with the car and decide to keep it, you will announce Google and they will release the funds to me.

If you do not want the car will also have to contact Google and cancell the transaction so you can be fully refunded and my car get's back to me, but it wont be our case because the car is as i described it and you saw it in the photos that's why i am sure that you will love it.

So, if you want to have a deal, we have to follow some steps so we can proceed. First you have to send me your info (name, address, phone so we can get in touch). Second, after i'll contact Google and start the transaction, you will receive an invoice from Google Checkout with more information about our transaction. If you will agree you will have to pay them the amount, and i will contact the shipping company to make the arrangements for you to receive the car in 3-4 days. So if you are sure you want to buy my car please send me the info i asked (name, address, phone) so i can register the transaction with Google Checkout.

Thanks for your response,I am willing to pay your asking price, but ill be paying through my online paypal account due to my location.Am from Norwich East of England and i'm on a missionary course attached to Norwich Cathedral, which will end in couple of month, that's why i can't use any other form of payment than paypal, the only safe and secure way for me to pay online. So give me the email linked to your paypal account if you have one and if you are new to paypal you can easily set up your own account at www.paypal.com its easy, fast, safe and secured, all i need is the email address you will use in your registration with paypal, that will enable me to make the payment. But before the payment you will need to send your zipcode for pick up so my shipping agent can estimate the shipping cost for me,as i will arrange a private shipping agent that will come for the pick up after payment.also include your phone number so i can call you when i need to,mine is +447011196989. PayPal will charge little fee out of each transaction, ill take care of that on my side and the shipping agent will come for the pick up after payment,so please email me with the information as soon as possible. Looking forward to hear from you soon.
Very best wishes,

jeannettemullins000@gmail.com
Hi there, Thank you for getting back to me.Can you assure me that the vehicle is in good state and that i will not be disappointed with it. I'm ready to pay your asking price and to be honest, i wanted to buy this for my Dad and he is a mechanic, but the issue is I'm a marine biologist and i do have a contract to go for which starts tomorrow and am leaving any moment from now.The contract is strictly no call due to the lack of reception on the sea area. But I'm able to access email anytime as we will make use of laptop so my only quickest payment option is PayPal as i can send money via PayPal anytime.Since I'm requesting this transaction to be done via PayPal, i will be responsible for all the pay pal fee/charges on this transaction and if you don't have an account with paypal, its pretty easy, safe and secured to open one. Just log on to www.paypal.com. I hope we can make the purchase as fast as possible? I have a mover that will come for it once payment clears and they will be handling the title for me. So i look forward to hear from you.

Common Scams - Directed at Sellers

A prospective buyer (scammer) contacts a seller regarding an interest in their vehicle. Emails between the buyer (scammer) and seller are exchanged.
The purpose of these scams is to gather information, solicit deposits or other fees. Anything other than legitimate interest as a potential buyer and owner of your vehicle.
If you are contacted by a buyer who exhibits any of this behavior stop all communications with that person immediately.

When in doubt always refer to Education and Tips located on the Safe and Secure page.

Particularly the following excerpt from Education on Safe and Secure can protect you a seller from most scams:

- Any legitimate prospective buyer will give you a valid phone number and discuss arrangements for meeting in person, viewing the vehicle, price negotiations etc. on the telephone once basic info has been exchanged in email.
- It is common for prospective buyers to request additional basic information in email before going to the telephone however if there is interest in purchasing once basic questions are answered then a valid phone number and telephone conversation is a certainty. This alone will eliminate the vast majority of scam attempts. Anyone that will not provide a valid phone number where you can reach them and get on the telephone should be ignored.
- If you have any questions about Safe-n-Secure™ and how you can help protect yourself against fraud, read our Frequently Asked Questions or contact us for assistance.

Phishing Scam - Directed at Sellers

A prospective buyer (scammer) contacts a seller regarding an interest in their vehicle. Emails between the buyer (scammer) and seller are exchanged. The buyer (scammer) then claims he wants a pre-purchase inspection of the vehicle. The buyer (scammer) sends the seller a URL of a phony inspection service and requests the seller registers on the site to set up an appointment for the inspection. As part of the registration process the seller is required to enter contact information, choose a password and enter mother’s maiden name.

The purpose of this scam is to get your password and mother’s maiden name. The scammers are counting on the fact that many people use the same password for all websites or logins. Once they have your password they will try to access your email and retrieve private or financial information. They may also try to login and modify your vehicle listing.

If you are contacted by a buyer who exhibits this behavior stop all communications with that person immediately. This is not a legitimate buyer.

If you have filled out a registration form or given any personal information, take the following precautionary measures right away:

  • Log in to your email account and change your password
  • Check with any financial institutions that send you email and see if there has been any unauthorized activity and then change your password
  • Login to your ClassicCars.com account and make sure nothing on your ad has been modified and then change your password

Overpayment Scam - Directed at Sellers

A prospective buyer (scammer) contacts a seller regarding an interest in their vehicle. Emails between the buyer (scammer) and seller are exchanged. The buyer (scammer) then claims he is ready to purchase and is sending a cahiers check that includes the cost of shipping. The fraudulent prospective buyer then requests that you (the seller) deposit that cashier's check and return the difference to him or deposit it in another account (the transporter's account).

The purpose of this scam is to collect money from a fraudulent check or money order. They are hoping that the seller will not wait for funds to verify and simply deposit and deposit.

If you are contacted by a buyer who exhibits this behavior stop all communications with that person immediately. This is not a legitimate buyer.
