Drive-Invasion, LLC (www.drive-invasion.com), in partnership with Turner Field, announces the 15th Annual Drive-Invasion Festival, taking place Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the Turner Field Green Lot in Atlanta. Drive-Invasion is a family-friendly event celebrating the American drive-in movie theatre and classic car culture. The all-day celebration features an antique car show, vendors, live music, food and three classic creature features projected onto a 40-foot movie screen.
Founded in 1999 by surf guitarist Scott “Rip Thrillby” Rogers, Drive-Invasion offers a unique form of entertainment that has thrilled cinema fans and music lovers over the last 15 years. After the festival’s original location, the Starlight Six Drive-in, converted to digital projection systems, the festival had to find a new home and Turner Field was a perfect match.
“The Starlight Drive-In is now automated with leased projection systems, which means only current blockbusters are shown on screen since films are now controlled offsite,” explains Drive-Invasion coordinator James Bickert. “Although Starlight is still a magical place for families to enjoy films together, we’re very excited about taking the Drive-Invasion Festival to Turner Field. The venue offers a much larger staging area and its own rich history.”
New Location Brings New Activities
The Turner Field location will also bring new features to Drive-Invasion. Television personality and food aficionado Jim Stacy (PBS, Destination America, Cooking Channel, Pallookaville Fine Foods), will be assembling his dream assortment of festival foods. Jim Stacy’s Food Truck Midway will be a curated, collection of food vendors providing locally-made favorites! Stacy's own Pallookaville and Pigmata will be on-site, and will sit side by side with other local favorites! In addition to great food, an artist market and a kid’s play zone are being added to the festivities this year.
“What could possibly be better than holding a festival on the very spot where Hammerin’ Hank broke Babe Ruth’s home run record 40 years ago?” said Bickert.
“We are excited to host an event like this for the very first time,” said Sabrina Jenkins, Atlanta Braves Director of Special Events. “This should be very popular with metro-Atlanta families who can spend the day together sharing fun activities, music and movies.”
Silverscreen and Gasoline Car and Bike Show
At this year’s event, Garage71 and Grease Inc. will host the popular Silverscreen and Gasoline Car and Bike Show. Held every year in conjunction with Drive-Invasion, the show features pre-1971 cars, hot rods, customs and bikes. Hand-crafted awards and prizes will be given out by celebrity custom builders for: Best Engine, Best Paint, Longest Haul, Best Bike, Best Build and Best Original. Attendees can have their pictures taken with vehicles and strike-up friendships with the drivers.
Bands and B-Movies
Drive-Invasion will feature a diverse musical line-up of 12 bands on two stages including Jimmy & The Teasers, The Brimstones and hometown favorites The Biters, Gargantua, Bigfoot, Ghost Rider Car Club, Rocket 350, Cletis & His City Cousins, Andrew & the Disapyramids, Dusty Booze & The Baby Haters and The Mystery Men. Drive-Invasion will also feature an all-star tribute with original members of Rip Thrillby’s surf band, The Penetrators.
Drive-Invasion Musical Director, Dusty Mumma stated, “We're providing numerous sub-genres of rock n roll that will deliver great entertainment value to a wide audience. All acts are known for their energetic stage shows. While many festivals are chained to one type of sound, Drive-Invasion strives to expand your musical experience.”
In the evening, the drive-in projector will feature creature classics Horror of Party Beach, Jaws and Mad Doctor of Blood Island. The programming was curated by event organizer and filmmaker, James Bickert.
“We're planning a beach theme that will really transport the viewer back to a 70s summer night at their old favorite drive-in. Radioactive monsters, mad scientists and a classic shark are the perfect “end of summer” remedy to delight the kids or snuggle up with your best girl. Iconic movie trailers and snack bar ads will play between the feature films to help fuel our time machine”, said Bickert.
