RK Motors Charlotte Truly Best in Show

Larry Edsall at Though the company and its building are new, RK Motors Charlotte brings a lot of experience to the classic car marketplace.

RK Motors Charlotte was created late last fall when Joseph Carroll, founder of Ohio-based Best of Show Automotive and Rob Kauffman, founder of RK Collection in Concord, NC, launched the new company. RK Motors Charlotte has since moved into two brand new facilities in Charlotte, N.C, housing 60,000 square feet of indoor showroom space, 5,000 square feet of office space and a 15,000 square foot service and design/build facility.

Best of Show was a high-volume classic car retailer. Kauffman was (and is) co-owner of Michael Waltrip's NASCAR racing team and a racer in his own right. He and Waltrip are among those who will be racing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France this weekend.

While maintaining a vehicle restoration shop in Ohio, RK Motors Charlotte typically has 100 or more classic cars available for sale.

By combining forces, said RK Motors Charlotte Marketing Director Jamie Wiehe, "we're taking it to the next step."

"We have everything from a 1934 Auburn to a 2011 Dodge Challenger," she added, "and from a $30,000 Roush Mustang to a $2 million Duesenberg."

Wiehe added that RK Motors Charlotte does sales primarily on consignment.

"The typical dealer buys at wholesale and sells at retail," she said. "We're an alternative to the auction block and a great way for people to sell their cars."

And sales are good, it seems. In fact, very good.

"We're selling a car or two a day," she said, adding that the emphasis right now on RK Motors Charlotte marketing isn't as much sales oriented as it is simply "getting inventory in the door" so it can be showcased for waiting customers.
