American cars in Britain have always had a bit of a "love hate" relationship with the British Public over the years! When the Mustang burst onto the scene back in 1964, this one car changed the way Britons viewed American cars in the mid-Sixties. The Mustang was seen to be trendy, hip and a very cool car to own! So different to the "chrome encrusted cuties" of the Fifties!
Many famous icons of the "Swinging Sixties" purchased Mustangs and they were a common sight in and around London, many were seen parked up in Carnaby Street. The size and style of the Mustang made it very user friendly for London and Britain's roads of the time. They say "once popular, always popular" and to this day, the Ford Mustang is the most popular American car in the UK.
I have owned three early Mustangs over the years; the first was a white 289 convertible with a blue interior and a white manual top. She was built in November 1964, and was imported into the UK in 1972 from California. I owned her in the late Seventies for a number of years. The second Mustang was a white hardtop with a 289 and a three speed transmission. She was built in October of 1964 as an export model destined for Australia. She never made it "down under" and was sold new in
San Francisco. I purchased the car at an auction in Las Vegas in 1999 and she was imported into the UK so after. The third and current Mustang, again a convertible built in May of 1964. She is a 260 V8 with auto trans and a power top in white. She is red with a red interior. This car was purchased here in the UK and has been here many years.
This Mustang and the previous two have always been a lot of fun to own and drive. They are fast and very beautiful cars to enjoy and have a little fun! A formula that has been tried and copied many times over the years, but the original is always the best! The Ford Mustang, performance, style and pace in a beautiful package! Those "distant hoof beats" keep on coming!
