Judge-Ment Day in Georgia
By Larry Edsall

Classic Car Articles by Larry Edsall A 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge Ram Air IV convertible brought $682,000 at RM's auction of the collection of muscle cars that Georgia collector Milton Robson has been assembling for some 55 years.

Only 55 cars were offered, but they brought $9.2 million.

The '69 GTO Judge was one of only five built and the only one in Starlight Black paint. However, it also was one of three GTO Judge convertibles in Robson's collection. A '70 Ram Air IV convertible went for $308,000 and a '71 455 H.O. drop top brought another $286,000.

Other top sales included the only 1960 Chrysler 300F factory four-speed convertible remaining for $437,250, a '69 Chevrolet Camaro ZL-1 coupe for $418,000, and a supercharged '69 Cadillac Eldorado convertible for $385,000.

"For many, the sale was viewed as a test of the market, particularly for muscle cars," said RM chairman and founder Rob Myers. "The results speak for themselves and not only reflect the outstanding quality and condition of the collection, but also illustrate that great cars - including those with superb restorations and solid documentation - continue to attract great prices at auction."

Classic Car Articles by Larry Edsall Mecum Sells McDorman Corvettes - and More

Long-time Ohio Chevy dealer Bob McDorman's personal collection comprised the big draw for the Mecum auction November 6 at Canal Winchester, Ohio, where more than a thousand people registered to bid and then spent $7 million on cars offered at no reserve.

McDorman said he plans to use proceeds from the sale to support the operation of his dealership, which has been in business for 45 years.

The top-seller was the 1963 Chevrolet Corvette convertible custom-built for GM executive Bunkie Knudsen. The car brought $400,000. The '64 ‘Vette coupe built for Knudsen's wife, Florence, went for $280,000 and another special '64 coupe, this one GM designer Bill Mitchell's Experimental Sting Ray, went for $160,000.

'Golden' Oldies for New Texas Museum Classic Car Articles by Larry Edsall

"Goldie," a unique, factory-built 1958 Austin-Healey 100-Six roadster called "the most sumptuously luxurious sports car ever made" is the headliner for the Art Deco Gala that will open the new Texas Museum of Automotive History in Fair Park in Dallas. The gala is November 20.

The Healey was unveiled at the 1958 London Motor Show and features Champagne Diadem mink-covered seats and door panels, a dash of Chinese kid and an ivory steering wheel, as well as gold-plated bumpers and grille, headlight rings and wire wheels.

Museum founders want theirs to be among the top 10 automotive museums in the world, with its own restoration shop and a vintage racing event and concours d'elegance.

For information, visit www.tmah.org.

P.S. "Goldie' is for sale by "private treaty" through Worldwide Auctioneers. If you're interested, visit www.wwgauctions.com.
