Kwik Gate offers a step up into the truck bed
With pickup trucks getting bigger, and taller, access to the cargo bed can be awkward, if not downright difficult. An aftermarket product called the Kwik Gate was designed to make access easier. As a bonus, it also provides some convenient cargo-carrying solutions – and can be used as a seat for tailgating.
Kwik Gate has a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $159.95 and is available through some 6000 retail outlets nationwide. It was created by two inventors in South Carolina, who displayed it at a trade show, where Bob Van Vleet saw it and its potential.
"I thought it was a neat deal," said Van Vleet, whose Convert-A-Ball Distributing Co. of Sidney, Neb., produces and markets various automotive aftermarket products.
"This filled a need," Van Vleet continued. "It's difficult to get in and out of pickups as tall as they are now. There have been a lot of accidents."
Van Vleet's company did some engineering on the inventors' original concept and now has Kwik Gates available for full- and mid-size pickups. Like full-size trucks, formerly compact but now mid-size trucks have grown larger and taller in recent years. Van Vleet said pricing for the smaller version will be within $10 of the full-size unit.
Kwik Gate is made of heavy-gauge and powder-coated steel rails that are attached to the pickup truck bed with sheetmetal screws.
The unit can be unfolded to provide a step for easier access to the truck's bed, or it can be configured as a bed extender. It can be extended vertically to provide a place to secure tall cargo. In its step-up configuration, it can be used as a seat for tailgating.
