Monterey Prevue

Vertical The annual classic car overload:
Monterey, Woodward weekend

We're not going to get sucked into a debate about the wisdom of scheduling the two biggest classic car events of the summer on the same weekend. We're simply going to say that the most important classic car events of the summer will take place in mid-August on California's Monterey Peninsula while the single biggest event, the annual Woodward Dream Cruise - takes place some 2500 miles to the east.

We'll also note that while Monterey is about millions of dollars, the Dream Cruise is about the million people who annually line the curbs of the historic boulevard where everything from Model Ts to muscle cars first put rubber to the road.

The action actually begins the previous weekend in both locations, with the Monterey Pre-Historics, a vintage car racing preview at the historic Laguna Seca Raceway in California, and with muscle and custom cars starting to cruise the ave. in an unofficial ramp up as traffic builds daily toward the official Dream Cruise on Saturday, August 15.

Bathing Suit Bike If Woodward gets a million or so spectators, Monterey gets what seems to be a million separate events, so many that you can't possibly take in everything, especially not this year when the calendar has become even more crowded, what with at least four new events fendering into the schedule.

Those events are:
- La Dolce Vita, a new Italian-car gathering Friday, August 14 on the fairways of the Black Horse golf course;
- Concours d' LeMons, a tongue-in-cheek showcase Saturday, August 15 at Monterey's Toro Park, where you'll see a collection of vehicles you'll never see at Pebble Beach on any weekend of the year, let alone this one;
- The Mecum of Monterey classic car auction, Saturday, August 15 at the Hyatt Regency Resort on the Del Monte golf course;
- The MidAmerica vintage motorcycle auction, Friday and Saturday, August 14 and 15, at Pebble Beach, where, on Sunday the 16th, motorcycles will be included on the 18th fairway for the first time.

Antique Car Also new will be a third day of bidding at the annual RM Sports & Classics of Monterey auction at the Portola Hotel on Fisherman's Wharf.

Among the other annual events are Concorso Italiano with its Kruse auction; The Quail motorsports gathering with its Bonham & Butterfields auction; the Russo and Steele Monterey auction; the Carmel-by-the-Sea Concours on the Avenue; the 36th annual Monterey Historics vintage car races – with Porsche as the featured marque -- and the 59th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, with its tour, art show, Gooding auction and, of course, the concours.

Meadow Brook is August 1-2

Detroit has its own concours d'elegance the first weekend of August with the annual RM auction on Saturday and the 30th Meadow Brook concours on Sunday on the grounds and golf course behind historic Meadow Brook hall on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan.

CarProperty stages first tour

Ultra Exclusive Bugatti CarProperty.com is a real estate website that specializes in homes with lots of garage space – some would say huge garages that happen to have homes attached. Anyway, the website will host its first Garage Tour Event in conjunction with the Monterey weekend.

At least 10 "car properties" will be on the tour, which will be held August 12, 13 and 15. General admission is $40 per person, or there's a $300 VIP ticket that includes travel by limousine. Shriner's Hospitals for Children is a beneficiary of the event.

Andy Granatelli needs your help

Andy "They Call Me Mr. 500" Granatelli is looking for some help:

"I am looking for the following items for my Hall of Fame Museum, which will open late this year in Auburn, Indiana. I need information on anything --speed equipment or cars -- built by Grancor Automotive Specialists (Granatelli Corporation), like Ford Flathead motors, heads, manifolds, etc.

"Also, looking for any racecars I owned or built, including Indy cars, street rods, Bonneville cars or a Fordillac. I would like to have any information on the whereabouts of any of the above. I will consider a loan, a donation or I will purchase the items. No matter what, I would like to know what's out there."

You can reach Granatelli at mrindy500@yahoo.com.
